Have you heard of Yakushima island located in Kagoshima prefecture in Japan?

Yakushima became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

The island is a natural World Heritage Site famous for Yakusugi (Japanese cedar) and the Jomon Sugi tree.
Especially the Jomon Sugi is estimated to be 7200 years old.

There are two theories why the tree is called “Jomon Sugi”. One theory is that the tree dates to the Jomon period.
And the other one is that the shape of the trunk looks like a Jomon pottery.
